Through My EyesOur perception of the world is influenced by our life experience, sensate acuity and those preconceptions that have accompanied us from childhood. When we survey life with the precise intention of understanding other points of view, we open our minds and hearts to new perspectives and deeper creative potential. Looking at the world from different vantages allows us enlightened glimpses into the arts and literature, human nature and ourselves -- into the depth and breadth of life's offerings. Prejudices are swept away by new revelations. Predetermined paths dissolve into a myriad of new possibilities. As seekers of a more profound life experience, we can revisit the source, the wellspring of our creative spirit, by envisioning our world through the eyes of a child. And, if we have remained lithe of mind and body, we can look over our shoulders, recalling and examining those pivotal moments in our early lives that inspired and defined our direction. As children, we were naturally curious and inquisitive, born with an innate ability to foster our creative spirit through wonder and amazement, imagination and awe. We had every tool needed to build a creative life. We knew the joy of working without need for outside reward, we could lose ourselves in total concentration on any task at hand -- from stacking up building blocks to investigating the entire contents of a salt shaker. And if something intrigued us, we headed straight for it with squeals of exuberance and delight. Even if our memories are blurred or dark, we can imagine the world through a child's heart and through a child's eyes: where goodness and love abound, where there is trust, no fear of mistakes, no shame and where the tiniest blade of grass or little crawly thing is an amazing, spellbinding discovery. Having children afforded me a renewed outlook as I rediscovered my child-like spirit in their eyes. And I have celebrated it ever since. |
