more how-to projects

We inherited a white table lamp a few years ago, which was too conventional for our home décor. I removed the shade and brainstormed other possible uses, finding my solution after visiting a local lamp store with an in-store repair shop. There, I discovered that acrylic lampshade backing can be purchased by the yard.

You will need a white or beige table lamp base between 16” and 24” tall including light bulb, 5 or 6 feet of 48 inch wide white lampshade backing (if your lamp base is slender, you will only need 5 feet), a straight-edge and scissors.

Lay out the backing on a flat surface. It has a tendency to roll up (because it is stored in rolls), so use weights at the corners. Draw a diagonal line from the top left corner to the bottom right. Carefully cut with scissors. When finished, you will have two triangular lamp coverings.

Set the lamp on the floor. Remove the weights from the backing and allow one of the triangles to begin rolling up into a loose tube. (The long, uncut edge will be the base.) Set the tube over the lamp. Tighten to create a cylinder. Your floor lamp is ready to plug in.
