I had an idea to use 3-dimensional squiggles on a canvas as a theme for a piece of art. I tried gluing yarn to a canvas, then I tried cording. What I came up with was so much easier and more manageable. |
You will need a canvas (the finished piece is 24” x 24”), a 4.5 ounce bottle of light-colored, 3-dimensional fabric writer found in fabric and craft stores), copper spray paint, white acrylic, a small paintbrush and a soft cloth. Decide on a pattern and lightly draw your idea on the canvas using pencil. I chose to intersperse loops with words from a Beatles’ song.
Following the instructions on the fabric writer bottle, trace your design on the canvas. After the fabric paint has dried (24-48 hours), paint the entire surface with copper spray paint, which dries in minutes. Next, paint a whitewash of watered-down white acrylic paint over the entire surface. (I experimented by mocking up a small section on poster board to make sure I had the proper consistency for the whitewash.) Immediately begin rubbing it out with a soft cloth to remove some of the white paint and to give it a glossy finish. |
